About this Training Course
Diploma of Work Health and Safety is the perfect course for those responsible for WHS in their workplace and also for those who wish to become Internal WHS Auditors, WHS Human Resource Practitioners, Safety Officers, Safety Advisor, or Supervisors with significant WHS responsibilities.
The duration of the face to face training for this diploma is seven days plus some assignments to be completed in your own time. The duration of the online diploma is 12 months. Some learners will accelerate their learning and finish prior to the 12 months, and others may require an extension. The total hours required by a learner to successfully meet the standards within the qualification is approximately 400 hours.
The course is made up of 8 units specifically selected to provide the best outcome for the student. Each unit consists of modules that address all of the learning elements and criteria to show that a learner is competent in Diploma of WHS.
This training package is embedded with Employability Skills. A full listing of all employability skills are available upon request.
RPL Information
If you have experience and knowledge, you may be eligible to gain RPL. RPL is short for 'Recognition of Prior Learning' and is the acknowledgement of skills and knowledge obtained through learning achieved outside the formal education and training system.
RPL recognises any prior knowledge and experience and measures it against the qualification in which you are enrolled. You may not need to complete all of a training program if you already possess all or some of the competencies included in the qualification.
During your enrolment, our staff will talk to you about your eligibility to apply for RPL for the Diploma in Work Health and Safety.
Training Course Outcomes
At the completion of this course you will have gained the skills required to be an effective WHS Supervisor or Practitioner with an understanding of:
- a working knowledge of the current WHS Act, its Regulations and Codes of Practice;
- a description of the consequences of exposure to health hazards at work;
- an understanding of the skills required to recognise, evaluate and manage health and safety hazards in the workplace; and
- an understanding of the skills required for administering various work health and safety functions, planning, policy development and ethics.
- This course will provide participants with a professional qualification enabling a pathway into a higher qualification.
Prerequisites
Entry Requirements:
There are no restrictions on entry to this course, however participants are required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instruction for:
- Referencing and understanding legislation, standards and codes of practice
- Assisting Government health and safety officials
- Preparing work, health and safety reports
- Establishing appropriate educational programs
- Investigating work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events
- Consulting with workers, employers and statutory health and safety officials
Participants will also need access to a workplace to enable completion of learning and assessment activities.
For those participants who are currently in between jobs or not employed, suitable project work will be determined on a case by case requirement.

This certificate course is typically completed within 1 year, but you can finish earlier by increasing the time you dedicate to your studies, or if needed can be extended to 2 years.

Diploma Units
BSBOHS501B “Participate in the coordination and maintenance of a systematic approach to managing OHS” in the workplace includes strategies, policies and procedures necessary to systematically manage OHS and its evaluation to ensure that the workplace is, as far as practicable, safe and without risk to the health of employees and others.
BSBOHS502B “Participate in the management of OHS information and data systems” assists in providing necessary information and performance data (including technical and legal information) to inform management and other stakeholders of OHS issues. Its also enables graduates to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of OHS management. This involves accessing and providing OHS information, collecting, collating and analysing data, and ensuring that this information and data is distributed throughout the workplace.
BSBOHS503B “Assist in the design and development of OHS participative arrangements” encourages consultative design, development, implementation, monitoring and reviewing practices with employees and others in OHS activity and decision making. The unit also takes into account the responsibilities for managing OHS, as well as participative consultation and communication processes within an organisation or business unit.
BSBOHS504B “Apply principles of OHS risk management”, provides a generic approach to identifying hazards and assessing and controlling OHS risks. It addresses the underlying knowledge and skills required to provide a systematic approach to hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control. The emphasis is on eliminating risk or, where this is not possible, minimising risk. The unit provides a knowledge base for the hazard-specific competencies in BSBOHS505C. Manage hazards in the work environment, and BSBOHS506B Monitor and facilitates the management of hazards associated with plant.
BSBOHS505C “Manage hazards in the work environment”, enables the identification of hazards, and the assessment and control of risks in the work environment. It focuses on the knowledge, processes and techniques necessary to control specific hazards. Hazards may include noise, light, radiation, hazardous substances, dangerous goods, dusts and fibres, gravity (falls from heights), thermal environment, biomechanical hazards, manual handling, biological or psychosocial hazards or hazards arising from work organisation.This unit is linked to, but differs from BSBOHS504B Apply principles of OHS risk management, which takes a generic approach to risk management and provides underpinning knowledge and skills.
BSBOHS506B “Monitor and Facilitate the Management of Hazards Associated with Plant” assists parties in meeting OHS obligations in relation to workplace plant and equipment. These obligations are based upon the National Standard for Plant, which is the foundation for occupational health and safety legislation in all states and territories in Australia.
BSBOHS507B “Facilitate the application of principles of occupational health to control OHS risks”, helps candidates facilitate the application of OHS principles to control risk in the workplace.
BSBOHS508B “Participate in the investigation of incidents”, promotes participation in the planning, conduct and reporting of incidents that may result in, or have the potential to result in the injury of people or damage to property and equipment.
Delivery strategy:
The face to face course is delivered via 3 face to face sessions with workplace based assignments to support each session.
Session 1 consists of a 3 (three) day program face to face with on-line assignments to be completed before the 2nd session.
Session 2 will be delivered 3 months later and consists of a 3 (three) day program face to face with on-line assignments to be completed before the Final session
The Final session will be delivered 3 months later and consists of a 1 (one) day program where students are required to provide presentations to complete the assessment. The final assessment presentation will be prepared over the duration of the course at the workplace. You will be required to attend at least 3 (three) presentations as a part of the learning and successful completion of this course.
Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy requires DRA Safety Specialists to verify the authenticity and currency of the material supplied for assessment.
Assessment methods used include: workplace projects, portfolio development, written assignments (some may need to be completed online), questioning and problem solving.
The assessment program for Diploma of OHS is as follows:
An online test must be undertaken for each performance criteria. This is followed by a report or workplace activity for each module. You are required to forward us completed assignments on the basis of one module per month prior to the final presentation.
The final assessment is a verbal in class presentation on the scheduled Day 7. You will also be required to submit your presentation electronically to the assessor.
Course Inclusions:
Comprehensive student notes and some resources on a USB stick are provided.
Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are provided when attending the DRA Safety Specialists Training Centre.
