Fire Safety Advisor Training

The Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008 requires *high occupancy buildings to appoint a Fire Safety Adviser.

Competency Standards

The Fire Safety Advisor course is comprised of the following units of competency from the Public Safety Training Package:

PUAWER001A	Identify, prevent and report potential workplace emergency situations
PUAWER002A	Ensure workplace emergency prevention procedures, systems and processes are implemented
PUAWER003A	Manage and monitor workplace emergency procedures, equipment and other resources
PUAWER004A	Respond to workplace emergencies
PUAWER005A	Operate as part of an emergency control organisation
PUAWER006A	Lead an emergency control organisation
PUAWER007A	Manage an emergency control organisation
PUAWER008A	Confine small workplace emergencies

The Fire Safety Adviser has a responsibility to:

be familiar with all aspects of building fire safety;
provide advice to the occupier to ensure that appropriate emergency planning has taken place; and
provide advice to the occupier to ensure that appropriate instruction is carried out at the prescribed times and intervals.

This program is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to assume the role and responsibilities of a Fire Safety Adviser.

(*High Occupancy Building - 30 or more employees, a Class 2 or 3 building that is more than 25m in height, a Class 4 building and an at risk licensed premises as nominated by the Commissioner).

Trainers

The trainers delivering this course are experienced workplace health and safety professionals with practical experience in industry.

Course Objectives

Understand the role and responsibilities of the Fire Safety Adviser
Develop an understanding of the Legislation pertaining to the fire safety
Identify fire safety installations/equipment in a building
Develop an awareness and understanding of maintenance and records pertaining to fire safety
Develop risk management strategies
Understand the emergency planning process
Understand the role and responsibilities of emergency control organisation members
Understand the role and functions of the emergency planning committee
Operate fire extinguishers
Conduct and evaluate evacuation exercises and fire drills

Certification

This is nationally accredited training and successful participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

Assessment

The range of assessment methods include:

Assessment workbooks for each unit, containing a series of short answer questions and group activities prepared by.

WHSR02A includes a requirement for the learner to undertake a simulated health and safety inspection of a workplace.

All units require learners to participate in group discussions and to answer oral questions.

The Fire Safety Adviser course is both theoretical and practical in structure. Training is conducted in the classroom over a period of 3 consecutive days. Students in the Fire Safety Advisor course are required to perform practical activities throughout the duration of the course. The last half of the third day is a workplace based assignment.

Fire Safety Adviser students are required to achieve competency in both written and practical assessment including a workplace project to be completed within a month of completing the theoretical component of the training.
